The importance of pedigrees in breed improvement cannot be overstressed. With comparatively few hairless guinea pig breeders focused specifically on breed improvement to meet a high standard of perfection, the breeding stock available to the hobby or commercial breeder is often limited. In order to make breed pairing choices that most benefit the overall condition and quality of the offspring, thorough records should be maintained and the pedgiree is the most common and efficient way to do this.
For managing a large herd, spreadsheets or database software are often extremely useful and many can be purchased online for a fee (if you are unable to locate one that you like that is specifically for cavies, try searching for pedigree softwares designed for rabbits). For small herds, maintaining individual pedigrees will provide sufficient means to trace an animal's history back.
Those breeding to sell should endeavor to provide a pedigree with each animal sold.
Open the pedigree document and save it to your computer. Change the information in brackets to reflect your caviary name and your own name/address/phone number. Of course, you can enter just a name and email address, or whatever other contact information you prefer. Save this personalized copy and either print blanks out to fill out manually or enter the information by computer and print out that way.
